The student and I had a very productive tutoring session today. For the first half of the lesson, we reviewed Chapter 2 for his Bio 41 class. We reviewed the key concepts of the chapter on page 29. He and I also read the Chapter Review Summary on page 57. We then looked at a power point presentation on his laptop computer. The title of the PowerPoint, chapter 2 review is Essential Chemistry for Biology. The student and I took turns reading the information presented on each slide. Some of the terms that were briefly discussed in the PowerPoint, chapter 2 review: atom, nucleus, electron, neutron, proton, ph scale (acid scale), base, solvent, compound. After he and I reviewed Chapter 2 for his Bio 41 class, we moved on to do some work for his English 205 class, Introduction to Short Story. He has already written two scenes for his first short story: an opening scene and a flashback scene. The genre for this first written assignment is realistic fiction. He got the idea for this specific story from a lunch he had at the wharf in Monterey Bay. Together, we brainstormed what could take place after his introductory scene and before his flashback scene. As we discussed on what action could take place in the plot, he took notes on his laptop computer. It is evident by his two completed scenes that he is a strong writer with good use of description. We also talked about the importance of having a major conflict in the story. A story about two people getting along is not very interesting. I gave him some index cards so that he can take notes on the main terms -- and their definitions -- in his Biology textbook. He is a bright student. He was focused and on task during the entire lesson. Thus the session was very productive.

We first started discussing times we would meet for the rest of the week. He expressed interest in needing help to prepare for his paper due in October. Then we discussed the assignment that is due soon. I suggested that he researched scholarly articles to use as evidence and to show his professor that he did a little outside research. We also watched the video of HER2 receptor and the purpose of Herceptin. As we watched the video, I explained what was going on because everything involved signal transduction. We worked on the assignment as I further explained the process of signal transduction. At the end of the session we discussed how he will approach the drawing portion of the assignment. We agreed to go over it and discuss the next assignment at our next session. He is taking a more active role in the sessions and is learning to understand the material better with a little bit of my guidance.
