Recent Tutoring Session Reviews

Biology Tutoring review by Aditi in Petaluma, CA
We covered the circulatory and respiratory systems today, in preparation for the student's exam on Tuesday. In particular, we reviewed the pathway of blood circulation, cardiac cycle, gas exchange, inspiration/ expiration, myogenic activity in the heart (conduction), blood composition and blood types. He successfully completed two quizzes I created on the subjects, and retained the concepts more clearly. In regards to the previous quiz on fetal pig organ structure/ function, he was confident in his performance and anticipated a perfect score.

In this session, the student and I finished going over chapter 12 for the first hour. This mainly focused on the structure of DNA. We talked about the double helix structure, generally about replication and the enzymes involved, and the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. I taught her some mnemonics that will help her remember the difference between purines and pyrimidines. We went over the review questions in the back of the chapter for the last half hour of the session, and she was able to answer all of them correctly. She has a test on this material on Tuesday next week.

Biology Tutoring review by Samantha in Petaluma, CA
The student and I tackled two very important concepts of cells: Mitosis and Meiosis. We began the session trying to understand Meiosis, but we had to start from the beginning and break down Mitosis first. With drilling and memorization help, the student was able to unpack Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase (and Cytokinesis). In my opinion, this was one of our most successful sessions yet. Before we meet on Wednesday, the student is assigned the homework of asking his teacher about the wording in two of her questions (in his most recent homework) concerning the type of the genetic information and number of copies resulting from Stages I and II of Meiosis.

Biology Tutoring review by Mateusz in Petaluma, CA
The student has a test on Thursday, so we met to review his study guide before the exam. I conducted this session in a Q&A format by asking him the questions off of his study guide to see how prepared he was. He did very well with the enzyme material, as expected, because he did well on his enzyme quiz last week. He was initially less comfortable with the newer material, but once we reviewed the concepts, he quickly remembered our discussion from Sunday, and was quick to pick up where we left off. Topics like transcription and translation required some additional review, and he was then able to recall information on the majority of the topics. I recommended that he look over the protein synthesis PowerPoint from class to wrap up preparation for his exam, since this was the material that he was still getting comfortable with. He has had a handful of encouraging scores in recent weeks, and I am sure that he will do well on this exam, just like he has down on recent assessments.

Biology Tutoring review by Talia in Petaluma, CA
The student has an upcoming test on organ systems in her biology class. She was given a table that she was required to know regarding the main purpose and organs involved in each organ system. We focused on reviewing this chart in detail prior to moving on to the nervous system. As I was asking her questions from her syllabus, I could see that she worked hard to keep up with the material she learned in class. So far, she is right on par with her class, and at this pace, she will be ahead so long as she reviews her notes.
