Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Biology Tutoring review by Ene in New Haven, CT
The student and I went over a recent exam and identified problems with balancing equations and mole ratios that he had missed. He got a 100 on his last test and was happy about it and this session we focused on his problem areas so that he would be finishing at least with a B in this class.

Today we continued to review for the student's chemistry final. We covered balancing redox reactions, thermochemistry (Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy) and endothermic reactions. We also talked a little more about empirical formulas and how to find them.

Biology Tutoring review by Harrison in New Haven, CT
The student and I covered naming and drawing functional groups on organic compounds. We also reviewed his old material which included naming hydrocarbons and drawing hydrocarbons. No test scores have been received yet. He did not struggle with the material, but he still practiced them to reinforce his memory. I told him to make flash cards or make his own chart for the functional groups, which he did. No concerns.

Biology Tutoring review by Diane in New Haven, CT
We worked on ionic and covalent bonds, Lewis dot structures, and naming compounds. The student struggled a little with naming compounds but did very well with the other topics. I think he will benefit from memorizing common compounds and elements so that he doesn't need to refer to the periodic table as frequently.

Biology Tutoring review by Ender in New Haven, CT
The student and I worked on balancing reactions and identifying reactions/solving them for a given type of reaction. He is actually ahead of the class on this, so I was teaching him and giving him some background info so he can go into the unit with knowledge already in hand. This is relatively complicated stuff, so we went over the information quite a bit before he started to pick it up. We will continue working tomorrow. I learned that he aced his last test which is great news and shows a lot of progress. He still doesn't have some of the information (charge states) memorized as well as he should so I am having him keep studying daily and continue to memorize that info.

Biology Tutoring review by Dominique in New Haven, CT
Today, we covered mitosis and the cell cycle. We went over assignments from school and covered definitions, labeling, and fill in the blanks. The student was also pleased to announce that she received an 88% on her bacteria and virus retake test and a 98% on her geometry test. I feel that she is fully prepared for her upcoming test on the cell cycle.
