We discussed the molecular orbitals of conjugated systems, defined nodes, non bonding and bonding orbitals. We talked about the Diels-Alder Reaction in terms of orbital symmetry. The Diels Alder reaction prefers endo addition and the stereochemistry of the dienophile is retained in the reaction. We discussed allyl and benzyl cations and radicals and the resonance structures that stabilize the cations and radicals and how this impacts the reactivity of these systems.

In this session, we returned to the subjects of unit conversions, nomenclature, and writing formulas. The student is slowly but surely understanding these subjects, and I believe with more work, he will have conquered them. He needs most help on where to start when given a problem, so breaking this down for him is my goal. He has an upcoming test covering these areas, so I assigned flashcard making and a few more problems. We plan on meeting once again before he takes his test.

The student and I discussed bonding, and how to predict the types of bonds between different atoms based on their position on the periodic table. We also discussed hydrogen bonding, and how to predict what compounds are capable of hydrogen bonding due to polarity. Phases were a consistent theme throughout the session, and we discussed how intermolecular bonds as well as London dispersion forces can cause the difference in phases between similar compounds. We ended the session by practicing writing electron configurations and electron orbital configurations. We discussed the energies of suborbitals, and how to find the position of electrons based on the positions of the less energetic suborbitals. The student continues to be a very intelligent student, and quickly picks up the material covered in lectures. I have asked her to start writing down concepts or notes that confuse her in class so that we may cover them in future sessions.

In today's session, the student resumed her study of acid-base chemistry more-or-less at the point where she had left off the previous week. We began the session reviewing the types of problems she had performed last time; from there, she proceeded through alternate definitions of acid-base theory (especially Lewis acidity/basicity), on to calculating hydrogen and hydroxide ion concentrations in aqueous solutions and calculating pH and pOH. Although she was confused by pH and pOH scales initially (I'm not sure if she has yet covered logarithms in math class), she nonetheless grew comfortable with solving these questions correctly, and, unlike last time, I legitimately got the impression that a clear picture of the underlying acid-base chemistry was actually sticking with her.

This was the first session I had with the student. During this session I asked him some questions to see what he wanted help with most and what he wanted to do during his subsequent sessions. We agreed that we would review any questions he had during each session or go over areas of difficulty in any particular chemistry chapter. We also decided that we will be focusing on solving questions during the sessions because he wants to practice applying concepts in real examples. I also gave the student extra questions to solve on his own and which we will go over on our next session.

The student and I went over her test from last week that covered the evolution of common animal phyla. She did well. We went on to examine her earthworm dissection today and to finish the accompanying worksheet. She seemed reluctant at times to trust herself in answering questions that she perceives she doesn't know the answer to, rather than reasoning out something. We worked on that skill as we finished the worksheet, and by the end, she was mining answers from the text for evidence in her responses. We will work together in stats next week.
