In this introduction session we discussed learning styles/strategies and then jumped into an introduction to biology including the scientific method, observations vs data, theories vs laws, and then followed the discussion with questions from the text book. We ended with a discussion of chemistry as it relates to biology (atoms, elements, compounds, and chemical bonding). For next week she is to read the next section in her review book about Water and the Macromolecules.

Biology Tutoring review by Vienna in Alpharetta, GA
Today I met with the student again in order to review further for his test. We finished the review exercises from his packet (explain these concepts and how they are related), covering topics like cloning, transformation, and DNA fingerprinting. After completing the review questions, we talked through the concepts again, this time with him taking the lead. I made up new practice questions on these topics so that we could test his understanding of the concepts. The student is noticeably better off now than he was before our meeting yesterday. He said that he had trouble with the ideas because the unit started 5 weeks ago and much of the material was taught at the beginning of the unit. More recently, class time has been spent on labs that were supposed to reinforce the concepts, but that didn't work very well for him.

Biology Tutoring review by David in Alpharetta, GA
The student and I went through her new worksheets detailing evolutionary landmarks and the nine major animal phyla. For her future test, she will need to know the scientific name for each phyla, and how that Latin name relates to the defining characteristics about the group. She picked up the facts well. This is a very in-depth class, covering things that I learned in upper-division zoology courses, so it will be difficult, but I think that she will get it as we continue our sessions.
