Algebra Tutoring review by Jonathan in North Las Vegas, NV
During this session, the student and I worked on his homework assignment for a section on exponential functions. We had touched on this briefly in our review of the previous sections yesterday, but we really had the chance to dive in on the subject. Before we began on actual problems, I broke down the basic structure of an exponential function, and showed how to differentiate exponential growth and decay graphically and from an equation. We then went through the problems, which included graphing, simplifying, and evaluating exponential equations. For this section, the student had more questions than in previous chapters, so we took the assignment slowly, and I was proactive in pointing out alternative approaches to each question. My goal was to help the student put together a more thorough understanding of the material beyond plugging in for variables. In addition, I tasked the student with concocting a detailed plan to approach each question, thereby encouraging him to use his problem-solving skills. I think the approach was helpful, and I would like to make it a regular strategy in our sessions.

Student and I worked on graphing inequalities and systems of inequalities. These are the two topics that were covered so far in his algebra class this week. He has a strong grasp of the type of line needed, shading, and finding solutions. I look forward to working with him again next week.

Algebra Tutoring review by Avni in North Las Vegas, NV
We covered graphing linear inequalities, both by isolating the x and y variables. We did a lot of example problems so I could see where the student was at in the problem solving process, and I think she did a great job! She knows all the steps and all the rules that she has to go through, and she shows her work well. The one thing that may be causing her to make mistakes is that sometimes she will forget to divide something in the equation, or she will forget that something is negative. They are just small details, and I know she understands the concept, so it's not worrying. She just needs to do some practice is all! I talked about certain strategies when it comes to graphing inequalities, and she picked them up really well; I think she has a mind for math, she just needs the right strategies to think about it. I did not leave her with any extra practice, but I will next session when I can see more from her next unit (radicals) because I think she's doing a great job with what we worked on today.

Today we completed aspects solving equations with order operations with parenthesis and exponents. In addition to exponent order, I conducted a review of exponent rules with multiple examples to master each concept. The student also completed subject matter with the multi-step problems that involved fractions, mixed numbers, and variables.

Today, we covered multiplying positive and negative fractions as a warm-up exercise. The student did great with this concept. He then completed his homework which was graphing standard equations and finding a point on the graph. I introduced him to the slope intercept form and will be emailing him a worksheet with information. At the end of the session, we started to complete two step word problems. I will also send him a worksheet with key terms to identify which process is needed in a word problem.

The student and I covered today topics in Algebra and Spanish. He completed his homework on simplification of polynomials, and I helped him reinforce the concept. We also covered scientific notation, exponent operations, fractions as exponents, and systems of equations. In Spanish, we reviewed the present tense conjugation of the verb TENER and he completed his homework. We also discussed how Spanish surnames work. He is bright and was very attentive and proactive.
