We covered counting (combinations, permutations, multiplication rule, compound counting), probability (definition, unions/ intersections, independent events, how they are combined with counting problems), trigonometry identities, and 3D shapes (volume, surface area, inscribed shapes, how extending side lengths affect volume and area). The student did well today, and it seemed like she had a good handle on all the topics we covered. She just needs some practice to expose herself to different kinds of problems. She was patient and focused the entire time.

We kept plugging away at the test prep work today, and began talking about the ACT, as a way to sort of relieve some stress and pressure from the SAT while still inadvertently preparing for it (since there is a lot of overlap in terms of strategies and prep between the two tests).

Today the student and I worked through some more sample quantitative reasoning problems so as to familiarize her a bit more with what she will see on the test. I also gained more insight into the areas she struggles most with. I am continually encouraging her to let me know when she doesn't quite understand something, so that I may make note of that and develop short lessons in the concepts she points out to me. We delved a bit into reading comprehension next, going over what types of questions are asked and how many there will be, just to make certain she is clear on that. We looked at an example passage with six related multiple-choice questions. She did very well on this -- I feel this is one of the areas she will need the least assistance with, as long as she practices good time management with test taking. We then moved on to some verbal reasoning practice, during which time I gave the student some paper and had her write down the words she didn't know so we could look them up in a dictionary to make study flashcards. We went through some online flashcards as practice and looked briefly at a small verbal practice test. Lastly, I showed her another sample essay prompt and helped her map out some cohesive ideas in an outline that could be used for such an essay on the actual exam. Next week, we will start with more practice tests and math concept lessons.
