We did a comprehensive review of the English section, practicing examples of every question type. The student is improving in his ability to assimilate reading material, but he needs to remember to read contextual information as well. In our next three sessions, we will conduct similar reviews of the reading, science, and math sections.

The student and I discussed her previous ACT (taken once without prep, scored 24) and looked at her score report. She wants to focus on math since it felt like it needed the most improvement, especially on timing. We discussed the science section a little as well; I agree that reviewing some sections on her own should go a long way. She worked on test 2 in the ACT book, math section problems 1-31. She is a careful worker and has a strong knowledge base. I agree that speed is a place where there is room for improvement, and we talked about a number of different perspectives and other ways to improve it. Some is getting used to the timing of the test (and I suggested timing shorter sections to get the feel of how long she has per problem); some is getting used to the workings of the test (and in particular moving forward even when she's not 100% sure about the method). She shows definite potential for significant score improvement, and has a clear desire to put in the time and effort to do so.

Today we worked on the last 35 questions of two math practice tests. We made some progress on the student's tendency to read questions really quickly without understanding what the question is getting at. On the second test she scored higher than she did with the first test.

We went over the student's diagnostic test for ACT math. Topics covered in the process include special right triangles, average/ simple rate problems, binomial expansions, arithmetic sequences, absolute value equations and inequalities, growth and decay problems, percent change, etc. We finished going over the diagnostic by the end of the session. Tomorrow, we will go over one of the other diagnostics.
