The student and I finished up the science section of practice test 1 in her test prep book. She seems to be improving in data interpretation and synthesis, and we hope to work more on conflicting viewpoint types of problems. We then moved on to the English section, where we went over several grammar rules. Next time, we will cover math.

Today we reviewed English for the ACT. We focused on her weaker areas in the subject through use of samples from her diagnostic. She struggled with some of the grammatical concepts but quickly picked up as we progressed through examples. I am sending her additional practice on her weaker areas and have asked her to continue working on the assignments I've already given her.

Today we practiced more science sections, specifically chemistry and planet sciences. Although she has taken chemistry, she remembered very, very little of it. We did a lot of practice with the most important concepts, specifically the Ideal Gas Law, reading equations and graphs, and understanding different temperature systems (Celsius v Kelvin v Fahrenheit). We started on planet sciences and I asked her to either finish this section for homework for next week, or, if she manages to get an ACT book before Saturday, to do one science section in her book (I highly recommended she get an ACT book this week). I would like her to focus on underlining key terms in her passages and questions.

Science and Math day. For math homework, the student had gone through 30 problems and marked each of the ones he got wrong. This made it very easy for us to focus quickly on the areas he was deficient in. We worked through many of these problems and reviewed areas in geometry, algebra and word problem comprehension in which he was lacking. For science, I had him work through a few example passages. He did fairly well with interpreting data. I've asked him, after solving each problem, to spend a few minutes checking all of his answers.

Today was my last session with the student. I went over her full length diagnostic score and identified any questions on the English and Math sections that she got wrong that we hadn't gone over yet. For the English section, we primarily focused on the rhetorical skills that would be tested - adding, removing, and reorganizing content. We also went over punctuation rules and introduced the vertical line test to determine proper punctuation (STOP punctuation vs comma). In the math section we jumped around a bit, but we reviewed slope equations for parallel and perpendicular lines, trigonometry functions, identifying rational numbers using a calculator, exponent rules (MADSpm), and coordinate geometry. I am sending her some additional practice questions to complete before her test on Saturday.

In this session, the student and I went over some basic test taking strategies before his second ACT exam the following Tuesday. After going over the strategies, we proceeded to go over Math. The student needed to work most on abstract word problems and atypical geometry problems. With our 10 test practice book, we were able to work through a decent amount of problems. As the student achieved a high score on his previous ACT, he had the most room for improvement on the Science and Math sections. I am interested on whether his scores for these sections have improved the second time he took the exam.
