ACT Science Tutoring review by Lauren in Albany, NY
We went over the ACT Science section. The student's attitude was willing to learn. I left her with practice on each of the subjects as well as a practice exam from a previous year to complete the science section. I talked about which passages to approach first and the types of questions in each section.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Peter in Albany, NY
We completed the last sections of the math test, all of the science test, and some discussion of the writing prompt. The student expressed that he didn't feel the need to go over the reading section since it was a particular strength of his. We focused on a lot of tips to cut through the noise (e.g. pick a number rather than thinking about "all negative numbers") and to keep working at a problem (e.g. worst case, grind away at the answer choices in the calculator), as well as a couple of specific review topics (angles in the coordinate plane, radians, properties of circles, etc.). I stressed that science questions are surprisingly easy -- once you can manage to get at what they are asking, which is still a challenge at times. Start by making sure not to get caught by misreading the question. We made very good progress toward wrapping up some loose ends, and I have a good feeling about the exam! See you next week!

We worked on chemistry's hardest passages. There was definitely a bit of a struggle going on, but by the end she was able to trust her gut and get questions right on the first try.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Art in Albany, NY
Today we went through an old ACT exam. We worked through most of the sections together to get the right answer, but we also went through one section separately, to time the student, and to see how she did without my help. Time will certainly not be an issue for her on the test. Overall, the lesson went very well. She should be sure to finish this exam before next lesson, and I will send her some more practice tests to do before our session on Sunday.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Ian in Albany, NY
We began by reviewing the student's English pre-assessment to make corrections based on concepts covered in the survey unit. She was able to consistently correct her mistakes, and explain the relevant grammatical or rhetorical principle tested. I would project a high scaled score in this section (30+ ideal), though we will return to it just before the test to review and make necessary adjustments. We went on to survey the content and format of ACT science, discussing the question/ passage types and practicing essential skills (reading/ interpreting visual and text data, identifying relationships, making logical inferences). The remaining time was used for guided practice, scaffolding the approach for organizing the information and responding to each question with the relevant data. The student's ability to perform the section's essential skills is above benchmark, though she tends to balk at too much data or hesitate with unfamiliar wording. Some may be attributed to a general need to take quantitative data slowly, though I think much of this will be reinforced with additional exposure to the content. Pacing might present a challenge as well, but our first goal is to correctly orient her to the section and build her familiarity with each of the necessary tasks. The student grew markedly more confident with the questions (owing to her considerable reading skills) toward the end of guided practice, ending the session on an encouraging note. Will meet again next week to close the science unit and hopefully cover the writing section.
