Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by ACT Reading Tutors

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Mary Theresa in Irvine, CA
Today was our first session. The student had taken a practice test prior to our session, and identified that she felt comfortable with all subjects but reading. Today, we went over the questions she got wrong in the reading section she took, and went on to do another practice reading section. She said that the time crunch made her make some small errors. She didn't have too hard of a time completing the questions when we worked together, so we talked about strategies to help her save time. I asked her to complete another practice reading test noting the time it took to complete each passage. I also asked her to write down the things to look for in each of the 4 passage types, to skim the questions prior to reading the passages, and to take little notes as she goes. We will continue working on reading in our next session.

The student has shown a lot of improvement in her reading--she scored a 32 on today's practice test, when we combined all of the strategies and supplied her with a timer. At this point, we are going to move forward with testing English before reading to simulate the entire test and practice doing reading with a bit more fatigue than usual, much like in the real ACT.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Virginia in Irvine, CA
Yesterday the student and I covered the reading section of the ACT as well as a few topics from the math section. We started by discussing the different question types in the reading section and going over strategies for approaching the reading. We worked through two practice passages using the techniques that we covered. In the last part of the lesson, we talked about factoring, coordinate geometry, and a few other short topics that we didn't get to in the last lesson. He needed some help with factoring and with graphing circles, but by the end of the lesson he was much better at both topics. In the reading section, he is good at skimming and understanding the passages, but he needs to work through the questions a little more carefully and check his work. I asked him to review his notes from our previous sessions and work through a math and an English practice test as homework. Overall, he did very well and worked hard during this lesson.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Aryell in Irvine, CA
Mostly we covered the ACT reading section, and therefore subjects such as how to construe tone from a passage. We also discussed strategies for deciding what answer is the best, as the student seemed to struggle with finding the best choice rather than simply one that seemed feasible. She was engaged and obviously wants to succeed on the ACT. I recommended ways that she could practice outside of this session, as well as a few websites that have practice ACT reading sections.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Samantha in Irvine, CA
We had a great session. The student struggles with reading the passage quickly enough to get good answers. We decided to try reading the questions first without reading the passage, which seemed to work for him to improve his time. We worked on finding the main idea in a passage and using that to help answer the questions.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Ian in Irvine, CA
Today we had our second round of ACT reading, to recap skills practiced in the initial unit, prime for test performance, and take final assessment data. We practiced the foundational skills for the section (locating significant details, observing cause and effect, defining vocab from context, making text-based inferences, and analyzing the author's tone and purpose) with progressively longer passages. Pre-reading strategy applied very well throughout, as evidenced by consistent relevant annotation - would highly recommend the student stick to this approach on test day. The student's reading comprehension and speed are very high, and with his time accommodations, he should have more than enough time to exercise the necessary caution and patience. I cannot overemphasize the importance of a good night's sleep and mental preparation the night before the test. His results continue to indicate a very high ceiling for potential score.
