Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by ACT Reading Tutors

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Phoebe in Glendale, CA
For our first session, we began with a discussion of the format of the test. Since the student has actually taken the SSAT prior and practice SSATs, he has a firm understanding of the test structure. The student is primarily concerned with math, but we are reviewing all test topics. We began with a brief discussion about Analogies. The student is familiar with the necessity to create defining relationships between the stem words and apply that same relationship to the answer pairs. We practiced with a few questions, and the student did very well. He was not however aware that the relationship might be vertical (i.e. the first stem word with the first answer word and second stem word with second answer word). We also briefly discussed Antonyms, during which time I stressed the importance of using the work space in the test booklet to write the definition of the stem word down, then write it's antonym and then match that antonym to an answer choice. This generally yields a higher success rate. We spent the remainder of the session on math. We reviewed fractions, decimals, percents, exponents, and roots. We concluded with a 25 Q quiz focusing on time management. The student answered 18/25 Questions and got 17 correct and 1 wrong. He's learning how to properly allocate time within the section. I will be sending the student some worksheets to complete prior to our next session.

The student continues to make progress with the review material. Particularly, we are tackling vocabulary words, which she is memorizing well and is able to form sentences with.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Brenna in Glendale, CA
We began by reviewing the format of the exam, and some test-taking strategies. Then we focused on the verbal reasoning section, going through Latin root words for suffixes and prefixes. We worked through a long diagnostic exam, during which they answered individually and then we reviewed the answers together. After each question I had the girls write down the words they learned, to review throughout the week, along with a set of practice problems from their books.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Lawrence in Glendale, CA
The student and I discussed Post-WWII Era America and the origins of the Cold War. We specifically discussed the impact of the end of WWII and how key events caused the Cold War. We then focused on and analyzed the role of the US in key developments of the Cold War; NATO, Berlin Airlift, Korean War, etc. We also analyzed the key changes domestically in Post WWII America. The changing role of home life/family, the rise of America as an economic power, the rise of suburbs, migration to the sunbelt, and finally the rise of mass media and rock-n-roll.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Joseph in Glendale, CA
The student and I met for the first time today to prepare him for the SAT this coming Saturday. We agreed to meet three times, covering one section of the test per day. He told me his previous score was around a 1300, and that he's trying to improve to that to the 1500 range. Today we covered the Critical Reading section. He has a limited vocabulary but very good comprehension skills. The single fill in the blank Sentence Completion questions gave him the most trouble because they're straightforwardly vocab based. The two blank questions were easier since he could use context clues and comprehension more easily. I had him write down words he didn't know the meaning of in order to begin to build a vocabulary list. We moved on to Passage Based Readings and single passage and two passage comparison with Science, Literature, and Historical readings. Again, his comprehension was great; he's fast and smart. But he's very impatient, rushes through things, and doesn't double check much. I tried to emphasize that his fast comprehension was tripping him up as often as it was helping him. He had a difficult time slowing down and paying attention to detail, and left plenty of points on the table. We will continue to address the need to careful and slow down at our next sessions. Next session we'll move on to the Writing Section and I'll continue to focus on test taking skills, the biggest hurdle for him.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Brian in Glendale, CA
Given that the student is now preparing to take the SAT first, we began by continuing our previous exploration of the types of vocab problems that she can expect on the exam. I would say that this area proved to be a strong point for her, but just to make sure that she is as ready for it as possible, I provided her with a list of words to study that are specifically geared for the new SAT. From there, we worked on sample math problems for the SAT - particularly those that stray from the multiple-choice format in favor of the grid input system. We wrapped up by going through various math subjects and gauging how comfortable she felt solving problems from each discipline. Seeing as she continues to do well on the Reading portion of the SAT, I figured that such an assessment of her math strengths and weaknesses would allow me to better determine what we should target in our next session.
