Session Summaries by ACT Math Tutors

ACT Math Tutoring review by Lilian in Raleigh-Durham, NC
We practiced and reviewed word problems in this session, as the student mentioned that it was a weakness of his during the last session. He did very well, and there was clear improvement from the last session in terms of speed and accuracy. We reviewed more test-taking tips and reviewed different techniques when approaching different types of problems. He was very positive and very polite during the session. I asked him to take a practice test simulating a real exam and to memorize around 20 equations before our next session in a few days.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Abigail in Raleigh-Durham, NC
The student has improved significantly. He is answering 80% of questions correctly and consistently. He should continue to practice before he takes the ACT again, with a focus on answering questions quickly. He should also practice the midpoint formula and geometry problems.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Holly in Raleigh-Durham, NC
The student and I met to go over the results from her latest practice test. She continues to improve in math. I reminded her to keep in perspective that she is a junior and that she has plenty of time to learn how to take the test and then to take it again if needed. I have mainly been working with her on math, but have offered to have an additional session with her next week to do the "mapping passages" reading comp lesson. We will meet twice next week; once to do reading and the other time to do more math.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Harriet in Raleigh-Durham, NC
Today we discussed the ACT in general (overview of sections, general strategies for bubbling and marking the test book), then focused on the math section. Specifically we went over the general background knowledge the ACT assumes you have (integers, exponents, imaginary number, roots, calculator skills, primes, factors, and multiples) and the algebra portion. When faced with an algebra question, you can either do the "right" algebra to solve it, or you can find a number to plug in. Both ways give the correct answer, and it just depends on which way to solve seems fastest for a problem. We then did 5 practice algebra questions to start getting used to the strategies. Before next session, she should get a test prep book, and take a practice math section within the time limit.
