Session Summaries by ACT Math Tutors

ACT Math Tutoring review by Mark in Grand Prairie, TX
The student is making steady progress in his English exam preparation (as shown by his increasing scores on the practice tests). He began today's tutoring session by completing the multiple-choice questions on his first practice test. Out of these seven specific questions, he got six correct (86% -- Bravo!). After completing the practice test, we moved on to essay practice. Today the student and I reviewed / practiced how to write a persuasive essay. In a persuasive essay, the writer takes a side -- for or against -- a certain issue. For this specific writing task practice, I gave him a prompt and an outline. I guided him through the completion of this outline. After he completed this worksheet, I had him read it to me aloud. I then asked him to give himself a numeric score of 4 through 1(4=A, 3=B, 2=C, and 1=D). He gave himself a score of 3 (B) on this persuasive essay. If I were scoring his persuasive essay, I would also give him a score of 3(B). This essay was a strong effort in that it included very specific examples to support his position "against" the topic / issue at hand. He concluded today's tutoring session by beginning his second English practice test. He got 23 questions correct (79% -- a much better score that his first practice test). During our next scheduled tutoring lesson, he will continue to work on this second test. It's exciting to see that he is making steady improvement. During our tutoring sessions, he is always focused on the task at hand. Thus, our tutoring lessons are very productive.

ACT Math Tutoring review by John in Grand Prairie, TX
This session was our last before the student takes the college entrance exam on 5/2. We reviewed all sections, corrected and completed practice test 6. She shows good command of the material, including (most of) the hardest math questions. We discussed material for her review through the rest of the week. We will meet again after she receives her results. We also discussed her options with regard to exam subject tests.

Continued reviewing questions for assessment exam. The student requested we review the Amendments as they will be on the exam. I asked the student how he thinks he is doing and he stated he is more confident now than he was when we started. He is using the test taking strategies I gave him and they are working for him.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Joshua in Grand Prairie, TX
I used our first session to talk to the student about his experience taking the SAT the first time: sections he did better on than others, time management, overall impression, etc., and decided we would start with math, since he told me it was his weaker section. We went through about 30 math problems, going over the answers and how the problems worked, sometimes working through a similar problem I would create with different variables in order to really drive home the conceptual understanding. On the whole, he seemed competent at math. He made some minor errors, but by practicing and not rushing, he should be able to eliminate most of those. He is a bright, friendly kid. With some hard work and practice I am sure he can raise his score significantly.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Zoe in Grand Prairie, TX
The student and I looked at some grammar questions from the materials to practice for the English section. She did great, and I think we made a lot of progress tonight! She has a solid grasp of the basics of transitional words and phrases, so we worked on more advanced questions using those concepts. We also worked on some problems that required her to parse out independent and subordinate clauses to get to the heart of a complex sentence's meaning. Since the student is so good at applying essential grammar rules to individual sentences, I tried to get her working on adding/deleting/revising sentences to edit whole paragraphs. Some of them were pretty tricky. She worked hard and made a lot of progress working with the new concepts, and I feel very good about our session tonight. Nice job!
