ACT Math Tutoring review by Ariel in Enterprise, NV
The student and I had a great session today. She did amazing on her homework sections - scoring between a 29-33 on everything (only one 29). She is going to do timed homework in each section for our next meeting, and will complete a full timed practice test after our next session.

The student and I met for the first time today. As she is going to be taking both the ACT and SAT, I decided to diagnostic with the ACT as the tests share three sections, but the ACT has an added fourth section, science. We were able to go through a far bit of each section from the most recently released ACT, and I think that she has great opportunity for improvement. The reason for this is that she is pretty much going off of natural ability right now. She's never really delved into the test, and certainly hasn't worked with anyone who knows the "tricks-of-the-trade" for the test. Therefore, the rate of improvement will be much quicker on top of her already considerable ability. She is a lovely girl, and I look forward to continuing to work with her. I think we are going to be able to make great improvements over her last score.

The student and I met up this week and did a practice English section for the ACT to get an idea of where she was sitting score-wise. We both took the section, and we spent some time going through the questions she got wrong and explaining why she thought her answer was right, and then I gave corrective feedback. We agreed that to try and keep her fresh for the writing section, she would do a prompt each week, making an outline and writing a short essay on a topic from a creative writing book that she enjoyed. I asked her to complete a practice Reading section and to go over the remaining questions she got wrong in the English section, paying particular attention to ones she couldn't correct on her own to talk about next week.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Austin in Enterprise, NV
The student and I picked up in the math section where we left off last. We started with reviewing adding and subtracting polynomials (combining like terms), factoring binomials and trinomials, and multiplying polynomials (FOILing). The next sections we covered were on linear equations (finding the slope of a line, finding the equation of a line perpendicular or parallel to another line and through a point, and finding the equation of a line through two points), linear inequalities, absolute value equations, direct and inverse variations, and solving rational equations (equations with polynomials in fractions).

The student and I picked up where we left off in Math on Practice Exam 1 from the ACT prep book. Topics included changing sentences into algebraic equations, multiplying fractions (with canceling), converting fractions to decimals, equation of a circle, ratios, combinations, and 3-4-5 triangles. She didn't get to practice since last session. For next session, she will try to do 30 minutes of Math each day. It was a good session. At one point, she remarked that she was proud of herself for getting a whole page of Math correct!

ACT Math Tutoring review by Amanda in Enterprise, NV
The student and I planned how today's and tomorrow's session will go. Today, we went over all styles of reading passages. He did well, but struggled on a few questions. I told him to look over his answers when he finishes, because he always finishes with a minute or two left over. He needs to use that leftover time to look back in the passage for the right answer, as opposed to just going off of what he remembers. He did best on the natural science piece, as expected. We switched to English. He missed a few on the first one. We went over the rules he forgot. I emailed him homework to do before our last session tomorrow.
