On the 9th of May, we spent the majority of session doing reading comprehension and vocabulary exercises. This session, he read a series by Yann Martel, and we discussed the themes and any new vocabulary words and their proper use. He then conducted a practice essay session. He has improved his understanding of structure and content dramatically. On May 27th, we only met for an hour. I spent the 30 minutes of our session with him working on his application essay. We worked on vocabulary, sentence structure, and voice. The next half of our session was spent on practice essay writing and outlining. He has greatly improved his use of varied word choice. I also explained to him how to use a thesaurus. He has demonstrated increased test scores and competencies in school.

The student and I had a great first session. We talked about his experience with the standardized test - what was easy, what was hard, how he felt about it (stressed, relaxed, etc.). We set a framework for our sessions together - why tutoring, why the test mattered, how we would work together. We spent the last 30 minutes working on language review. He has weekly vocabulary work he is to do, based on words he didn't know in our session (write the definition, use the word in a sentence, practice with mom and dad). He is a delight.

We started off with a review of adding and subtracting negative numbers, multiplying and dividing negative numbers, basic order of operations, factors and multiples, and reducing fractions. New topics for today's practice included changing improper fractions to mixed numbers, changing mixed numbers to improper fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, decimals, and fractions as decimals. Overall, this was a very positive and productive session. He displays a heightened level of mental acuity that makes these sessions enjoyable and entertaining.

We started going through the essential equations for the various physics topics. We looked at force and motion of objects and how to find average velocity, acceleration, and momentum of an object. We looked at calculating work and energy both kinetic and potential and how both energy and momentum are conserved in a closed system. We compared the force of gravity and the force between two charges and how both are inversely proportional to the square of the distance. We looked at the equations for electric fields from a point source and between two parallel plates. We reviewed circular motion and rotational force, acceleration, and momentum. Lastly, we reviewed springs and simple pendulums and how to find the period for simple harmonic oscillators. The student is doing well with kinematics and electrostatics.

In today's tutoring session with the student, we began by reviewing the material she completed for homework. We first looked over the essay she wrote. Overall her essay was well written, however I had a few specific comments to help her get an even higher grade. Specifically, I told her that two of her examples were more broad foundations rather than specific points and as written, leave the grader to determine how the argument is made. We came up with particular examples that exemplify her thesis. We also worked on ways to make her conclusion sentences stronger and improve her transitions from one paragraph to the next. We next reviewed the writing section and again determined that her incorrect answers mainly stem from not looking out for all of the grammatical errors we have gone over. We reviewed the few reading section questions she answered incorrectly. We spent the last part of the session going over math concepts such as 45-45-90 triangles, dimensional analysis, and probability. I wish her the best on her SAT this Saturday!
