ACT English Tutoring review by Mimi in Chester County, PA
Today the student and I went over the English section in depth. I took a look at some of the common types of questions that he misses on the English test and put together a few grammar and English review lessons so he won't miss these questions in the future. He didn't have time to do the practice essay I gave him last week so in addition to finishing this essay, I also gave him a full English practice test to do, grade, and review before next week.

We continued going through the diagnostic tests that the student took last week and finished up the science. On the math test, we went over what fractional exponents mean and how to "undo" exponents with radicals and vice versa. You have to be careful with problems like (4x+3)^3 though because that means (4x+3)(4x+3)(4x+3) and you can't simply cube 4x and 3 separately. Next time, I'll work with the student on some specific topics (trig, exponents, simplifying, logarithm) In science, the student had some trouble with the big picture questions for which you have to draw a conclusion outside of the passage given, or ones where you have to use the opinions of Scientist 1 and Scientist 2. In our next sessions, we'll work on strategies for eliminating answers so that you're only left with the best one, or at least get it down to a 50% chance of a right answer.

ACT English Tutoring review by Asta in Chester County, PA
I went over the homework I gave to the student last week. For the reading, all the questions she missed were "inference" type questions. I told her that when she is considering all the answer choices for "inference" questions, she needs to consider two things: relevance and tone. The correct answer choice will address something the author has already written and will also be close to the tone in which the author wrote. In addition, she needs to keep in mind answer choices with strong or absolute language will also most likely be incorrect. For the math, she missed some composite polygon questions. For these, she will need to break up the figure into more manageable/regular polygons. She also needs to label her own work. Her writing has improved since we last met. We worked on two more practice essays in class. If she were to write for the actual exam how she wrote for these practice tests, she should be scoring in the high range (10-12) for the essay.

ACT English Tutoring review by Domenic in Chester County, PA
We went over practice problems and the primary makeup of each section; putting emphasis on the Science section, since it is the most unfamiliar. The student excelled easily in all sections, although next session, we will pay more attention to Reading, as that was the section that could use the most work. I gave her problems we didn't do in the first practice test in her ACT book to do before the next session.

Looked at English test diagnostic results; worked on problematic areas. Worked example problems in English, math, and science on ACT website. Made plan for coming week: buy red ACT book, take practice tests, track scores and progress.

ACT English Tutoring review by Zelalem in Chester County, PA
In Wednesday's session, we covered ACT Science and Math. We focused on some timing techniques as well. The student is improving with each lesson. He's gone up from English 19 to 25, Reading 24 to 35, and Science 23 to 26. I assigned him 1 English, 1 Science, and 1/2 Math for homework.
