This session we went over the math section of an assessment practice test. We reviewed a few concepts that the student needed to review-- mainly trigonometry/ geometry concepts-- and looked at different ways to solve the problems. We talked a lot about visualizing the problems or rewording them in ways that are more accessible or understandable-- converting from math-speak to plain-speak, as it were. We also looked at solving problems by working from the 'top-down,' that is identifying the last step needed to get the answer, then figuring out what is needed to get to information to perform that last step, then figure out what is needed to get the information for that, and so on until we reach the information that we are given and can climb our way back up to the answer. Next session we will go over the English and science sections.

The student did very well understanding math and science sections, but made small mistakes in both sections. If she focuses on minimizing those mistakes she will do much better next test. I encourage her to work more deliberately and double-check her work to prevent these avoidable errors.

The student and I focused on arithmetic reasoning for the first half of the session. Rate problems, ratio, and percentage problems integrated into word problems were our main focus. I pointed out the need to work backwards from the question to determine what was needed to answer the question in order to determine how to utilize the information provided in the word problem. This was a good opportunity to point out the process of interpreting a word problem and developing a plan to solve. We then moved on to science focusing on evaluating experimental design and identifying elements of experimental design. This is a good basis for the science section because often questions not directly related to experimental design are easier to approach if one can identify these elements to understand the data represented and how it has been represented.
