ACT Tutoring review by Xuan in Olympia, WA
In this session, after I learned some more about the student's experience with the ACT so far, we started by working on the English section. We worked through the questions for two English passages, and I pointed out the concept that certain questions were testing. He did well on questions about grammar, but sometimes had more trouble on questions about stylistic changes to the passage, such as where to insert a certain sentence. We worked on looking at the surrounding context and passage structure to answer questions about where to insert a sentence or phrase. We also talked about recognizing questions about redundancy, and how to use surrounding context to choose the correct tense for a verb. We then moved on to work on reading. We talked through two reading passages, and I gave him some tips about timing and what to keep note of while reading the passages. He was able to summarize both of the passages well after reading them, showing that he understood the main ideas. He did well in the first passage of prose fiction, but had slightly more trouble getting past the formal, academic tone of the second nonfiction passage to understand the meaning behind certain lines. He did a good job looking back at the passage to reference cited lines. We also practiced using surrounding context to infer meaning, and basing answer choices on textual support, rather than only on reasoning. I suggested that he consider skipping the social science passage when he takes the ACT, and coming back to it at the end, since that is the passage he tends to feel least comfortable with. Finally, in the last part of this session, we worked on two science passages. He did well on both passages with no major problems, though he should remember to always pay attention to labels on charts and graphs to make sure he is looking at the correct information. Next time, we will check his timing on the different sections. I suggested that he practice by timing himself as he works through reading and science passages, following the timing scheme we discussed.

ACT Tutoring review by Alicia in Olympia, WA
The student and I worked on the math section during this session. We started out by doing the practice problems at the beginning of the book and writing out some of the helpful strategies we found while doing those. We went on to the first half of practice test 4 and were able to add several more strategies. I've also given the student a document that lists several formulas he'll be expected to know for the ACT. He will look over them and put them into his calculator for homework, along with his regular homework of problem sets and word roots.

Today we drilled science and English. The student seems to be making good progress. I left extra practice problems for him to complete by our next session.
