I assigned a reading and science section. He completed both, and he got a perfect score on the science! We spent the day going over math with systems of equations and matrices. I taught him how to put systems into a matrix and use row reduction to solve them. We also did some general review of topics we worked on a long time ago - lines and parabolas.

The student completed some practice reading and English problems since our last meeting. She did an excellent job on the English (15/15) and only missed 1 on the reading passage she completed. We did a little review of some geometry formulas on the math section, and we also practiced planning and setting up different problem types. I introduced the science section, giving general strategies and identifying what to look for on each question type. She did very well on the few practice problems she completed, though some additional practice will be needed to get more comfortable with the phrasing and timing on this section. We finished by introducing the writing section and discussing some strategies for using her time on this section. She will need to complete some independent practice to prepare.

In this session, we first graded the work I had given the student over the weekend. He continues to improve with each session, which is great! Last week he had the biggest trouble with reading, but this time we got 18/20 questions correct even though he was assigned harder passages. We then worked a little on each section and I noticed his two weak areas: geometry & time management. I told the student that there are some equations he will have to memorize going into the exam to help tackle those math questions. Now that his accuracy is better, I will be focusing on time management, as that is another important factor. I believe he takes the most time in reading, so we are going to work on efficient active reading in the upcoming sessions.

The student and I had our last session before her first ACT on 3/3. Since this was our last session, I wanted to address her weaker areas, which are science and math. She also asked that we go over a few grammar questions from an English passage. These concerned mostly issues with word choice and understanding punctuation with possessive nouns and pronouns. We clarified the problems for her and then completed three science passages. She said she struggles with understanding what tables are showing, but after working through these passages, she felt much better about graphs and tables. We worked through the first passage together, and she interpreted the second and third passages on her own and did well. We used the rest of our time to look at some math problems that she had marked while practicing. I answered her questions and gave her extra examples to solidify the concepts. I then quizzed her on general concepts/formulas that she should know for the ACT. We identified a few formulas that she should commit to memory better, and she will review them over the next couple of days. I also advised her to work on a couple of passages for each section prior to her ACT on Tuesday. Overall, I think she is well-prepared for her ACT.

The student and I reviewed the Math, Science, and Writing sections of the ACT today. The student had relatively little trouble with the Math practice we did, but some of the Science questions confused her at first, so we examined how to reference those answers in more detail.
