Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

ACT Tutoring review by Zoe in Chesapeake, VA
The student and I reviewed some math concepts, including problems requiring her to convert units, simplify exponents with multiple bases, input multiple functions, and calculate distance between two points on a coordinate plane. She seems to have most of these down, so next time we'll move on to more geometry. We read through a couple of English passages together. In future sessions we'll work more on punctuation as well as comma splices and sentences involving multiple clauses. Finally, we discussed test items discussing experimental design in the science section, looking at some earth sciences questions as examples.

ACT Tutoring review by Cody in Chesapeake, VA
The student and I went over two different ACT science sections he had previously completed, and I explained the answers to questions he missed. We then went through the last ten questions of the math section of a practice test he had on his computer, as he indicated he usually does not do well on the last ten. We looked at topics like systems of inequalities, solving exponential equations with similar bases, and other higher difficulty questions. We will continue to work on these.

The student and I did an overview of the ACT. We did review of a number of math concepts, including those involving number types (integer, real, etc.), performance of operations with fractions, exponents, and radicals, and basic geometry. Geometry was identified by her as an area for growth. The homework I assigned is a review of math strategies in the ACT prep guide, geometry formulas review sheet (begin to memorize formulas), and geometry practice sheet. Her optional additional homework is diagnostic ACT math test.

We went over the ACT Reading test and the "easy" types of questions. The student needed help with skimming for key words. Her attitude was mostly positive, though she did give up too easily sometimes. I talked about strategies for time-saving, identifying question types, and how to approach each question type. I left her with practice on all the question types we covered today.

ACT Tutoring review by Alyssa in Chesapeake, VA
The student and I focused primarily on the math during this session. She definitely understands all of the concepts needed to be successful in the math section. Towards the end of our session we decided to try the strategy of reading the last line of the problem first to determine what the question was asking for, and then read the rest of the problem to determine what is given and what is needed. She seemed to find this approach beneficial, so we'll continue to practice using it.

ACT Tutoring review by Brian in Chesapeake, VA
We covered an entire section of reading and a section of science. For reading, we talked about utilizing evidence to create conclusions. It is important to then place those conclusions into dialogue with the answer choices. The student should be looking back and forth between the passage and the answer, working out plausible pieces of a puzzle for an ultimate decision. She should pay attention to word choice as well as tone of the author, and take care to read the small description at the very top of long passages for context. For science, she should pay attention to relationships between various viewpoints and organize, generally, the perspectives of different writers. She should take care not to make fundamental assumptions and keep an open mind about the possibility of "none of the above" answer choices.
